About Institute
Swapnil Sonawane, an alumnus of Mindscreen Film Institute's 6th batch, has made a significant mark in Indian cinema as the Director of Photography for "Newton," which was India’s official entry to the Oscars in 2018. Sonawane's journey into the spotlight began with an intriguing lesson from his mentor, Prof. Gyanashekharan at Mindscreen. During a class discussion on the basics of photography, Prof. Gyanashekharan posed a thought-provoking question: "Do you need a lens on your camera to form an image?" While some students believed a lens was essential, Sonawane recalled his knowledge of pin-hole cameras and confidently answered no. This foundational knowledge and his curiosity about photography's roots played a key role in shaping his approach to cinematography.
In "Newton," Sonawane's expertise is evident in his distinctive style. The film's cinematography stands out for its use of natural light and wide-angle shots, which vividly capture the dusty, rugged terrain of the jungle. This choice was not only about visual appeal but also about authenticity. Sonawane’s meticulous approach involved extensive research and precise timing to ensure that each scene conveyed the right mood and realism. His work has been praised for its ability to bring out the natural beauty and rawness of the environment, adding depth and texture to the film. Through his innovative techniques and dedication, Swapnil Sonawane has demonstrated the powerful impact of thoughtful cinematography on storytelling.
